Others have suggested it but now it's official: Joe Hoeffel is thinking of running for lt. gov. In today's Inky:
"I am considering it," said Hoeffel, a lawyer in Philadelphia. The governor needs the best possible governing team for his second term."
Hoeffel formerly represented the 13th district (parts of Montgomery County and Philly) in Congress, and held office as a Montco County Commissioner, and state representative for the 153rd district (now held by Josh Shapiro).
Currently the governor and lt. governor run separately but a bill in the state legislator would allow the gubernatorial candidate to select a running mate. If passed it could affect the 2006 election.

Joe Hoeffel would be my horse. This guy is clearly gunning to be governor if he does run. One way or another, if he is elected, he would be the Dem nominee in 2010. Rendell would either be a cabinet head in Washington (or VP) or be term limited.
Oooooooooooooooooo... this would be too cool.
It will be interesting to see what happens. If the new rules on gov / lt joint tickets pass Rendell will either have to commit to Knoll or find some graceful way of replacing her.
Hoeffel is definitely one of the people I'd like to see stay in public service
if that bill is approved, my guess is that it will be approved after the 2006 election or say something to the effect "this bill does not apply to anybody currently occupying the office of Lt. gov." I just don't see this bill actually being enacted and applied to the 2006 election.
