weekly legislative update

This is a list of bills that passed the Pennsylvania House or Senate this week, and mention of any noteworthy resolutions. Standard caveats apply (resolutions not generally included, list of sponsors deleted if it was too long - three lines in the originally formatting).

Our accountants friends at PICPA have updated their legislative page; anyone who pays an EIT may wish to read over their update this week.

The Inquirer has renewed their practice of listing significant bills that passed the state legislature. I haven't been able to find their materials online but will continue to invesigate the possibility of linking to them.

Other weekly updates are available for this week:

Resolutions

Several resolutions passed, but none really struck my interest.

Although it's not been a hugely public campaign, the partial victory that occured when HB 957 passed is significant for both health care workers and patients in health care facilities all over the Commonwealth. This bill stops hospitals, nursing homes, and certain other health care employers from being able to forcibly mandate that their employees work double shifts. Since most hospital RNs, for example, already work a 12-hour shift, you can consider the impact on patients to having a nurse that's been working for 24 hours straight.

Kati,

I agree completely. The Inky did, I think, have an article about it this week. Our nurses work long and hard for not enough money. Every time I hear legislators complain about their salaries and perks I think of a nurse working a double shift. Those are the people we need to make sure are well-education, well-rested, and well-paid.
