Ancestry.com is allowing free access to their Civil War records this week, until the 14th (or thereabouts). You can not only find abbreviated service records but sometimes a physical description (height, complexion, eye and hair color). As one of my family's historians I have fairly complete files on my ancestors. Rummaging through ancestry.com this weekend I didn't find any new Civil War soldiers in my background but I did find out more about the ones I knew we were related to. It's fascinating. One infobit -- not only did my father live 20+ fewer years than his Civil War ancestor, but he was nearly 5" shorter. From old photos it looks like those tall guys married short women and diluted the stock ....
