Last Monday (2/25), the Wall Street Journal had a lengthy article (“Up close: inside the leaders and laggards”) on the 25 best and worst performing companies over various time periods (1 year, 3 year, 5 year, and 10 year). I wondered where Pennsylvania companies might fall on these charts. Time constraints restricted my research to just the past year. I looked at where the corporate headquarters were located, not just store or plant or sales locations. I checked either their websites or, where those were unfindable or unforthcoming (security and all that), Hoover's or Wikipedia.
Among the best performers of the last year, only one, Consul Energy of Pittsburgh, is based in Pennsylvania.
On the downside we have Sovereign Bancorp of Philadelphia and Rite Aid of Camp Hill.
Otherwise, it looks like all of our corporate citizens are somewhere in between.
