PA in the WSJ

This is a list of articles regarding Pennsylvania in this week's Wall Street Journal. Chances are I missed something, but these are the articles that caught my eye.

It should be noted that I routinely do not read the editorials in the WSJ. So any discussions of the state, its elected officials, businesses, or citizens, in editorials will not be mentioned here.

PA Politicians

No Pa politicians but politics in PA. A note that the Clinton campaign has already opened a campaign office in PA is included in “Clinton looks beyond Tuesday’s primaries,” by Amy Chozick (3/01)

This is interesting. From “DNC accuses McCain of finance rules,” by T. W. Farnam and Brody Mullins (2/25):

Donations from Philadelphia-based law firm Blank Rome LLP mirrored the overall pattern of large donors. Employees of the firm have given Mr. McCain about $187,000 during his presidential campaign, making the firm the single largest source of campaign funds.

PA Businesses

Pittsburgh International is one of the airports that have expressed interest in the TSA’s fast-pass security system, as noted in “Flying through airport security,” by Stephanie Chen (2/27). I guess Milton didn’t put that on the agenda for PHL?

Oh, dear. “Alcoa faces allegation by Bahrain of bribery,” by Glenn R. Simpson (2/28)

Oh, dear, again. “Toll posts loss; new-home sales slowest since ’95,” by Michael Corkery and Jeff Bater (2/28)

We can all rest easy, Mark Zandi is back. Mr. Zandi, of West Chester based Moody’s Economy.com is quoted in “Paulson rejects plans to bail out homeowners,” by Michael M. Phillips and Greg Ip (2/28).

The University of Pennsylvania’s real estate development projects in Philadelphia are the focus of “Colleges teach ‘urban development 101’,” by Nick Timiraos (2/27)

Other PA

Matthew Woessner of Penn State is one of the co-authors of a forthcoming study from the American Enterprise Institute, “Left pipeline: why conservatives don’t get doctorates,” on the preponderance of liberals in academe. (2/29)

In “Tension shakes up Esee Lauder dynasty,” by Ellen Byron (2/27) we learn that William Lauder attended Penn’s Wharton School and an institute at the University of Pennsylvania is named after the Lauder family.

Other Interesting Tidbits

From “In new-media world, everyone is sounding like a beltway insider,” by Lee Gomes (2/27):
Like most writers online, Rick Klein, who covers politics on the ABC News Web site, invites reader comment. The posts he gets tend toward predictable red vs. blue harangues. But one commenter, “Henry,” stood out for his unusually insightful analyses of campaign strategies, exit polls and other election esoterica.

Curious about Henry’s identity, Mr. Klein wrote him and asked: Are you a midlevel staffer at some big presidential campaign? Or perhaps a K street lobbyist, whose livelihood will be affected by November?

Henry turned out to be a high-school teacher in California, whose only connection to the Beltway was a broadband one.

For whatever reason that just made me smile!
