Schwartz on Spending Bill

from the inbox:

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, senior member of the House Budget Committee, delivered the following speech today on floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Pennsylvania Congresswoman believes that while cutting spending is necessary to reduce the deficit, the Republican spending bill makes deep and immediate cuts that threatens our economic growth and destroys American jobs.

“I rise today to offer some truth on the Republican spending bill. Over 300 economists believe the Republican bill to cut $61 billion in midyear could eliminate 700,000 American jobs and shrink economic growth by 2 percent. These are short-sighted cuts that threaten our recovery and our economic competitiveness.

“Our goal should be job creation, not job destruction.

“My colleagues across the aisle only care about cutting without regard for where the cuts come from, how they negatively impact American families, or how detrimental they are to our economy.

“This is not governing. Spending cuts should not be politically motivated or economically harmful.

“We do need to cut spending to reduce our deficit. But they must be targeted and responsible. They shouldn’t cut into our core obligations to our seniors, our safety or our future.

“Our nation’s economic growth depends on investing in education, innovation, and infrastructure – all critical to private sector competitiveness. Balancing spending cuts with smart investments is the only way to ensure new jobs and economic growth.

“It’s time for Republicans to move from political rhetoric to actions that will really work to move the economy.”
