WomenVote PA, an initiative of the Women’s Law Project, today announced that it will focus on educating and mobilizing the women of Pennsylvania during this critical election season and beyond. Through education and collaboration, WomenVote PA will work to increase the participation of women in the electoral process in the November 2012 election and in local, state and federal elections in 2013, 2014 and beyond.
Utilizing the new and comprehensive study by the Women’s Law Project, Through the Lens of Equality: Eliminating Sex Bias to Improve the Health of Pennsylvania’s Women, WomenVote PA will provide important information about the current health and legal status of women in Pennsylvania to women throughout Pennsylvania. It is critical that women are heard and their voices informed when it comes to issues that are essential to their health and well-being and that of their families.
Led by nationally respected feminists Kate Michelman, president emerita of NARAL Pro-Choice America and Carol Tracy, Executive Director of the Women’s Law Project, WomenVote PA connects the power of a woman’s vote to the conditions of her life, including her health, her personal safety, and her economic security.
• With issues ranging from sexual violence, reproductive rights and the impact poverty has on women’s health, it is vitally important that women are informed and able to effectively communicate their concerns.
• Economic security, such as equal pay for equal work, or family and medical leave, access to affordable childcare and safe and reliable transportation options play a key role in ensuring the well-being of women and their families.
• When the health, personal safety, and economic security of women and their families intersect, the result is equality - equality for women and girls in school, at work, at home and in public.
