No wonder our children are getting sick.

This is why I love tv shows that educate the public on cooking on cheap like that British cook, Jamie Oliver and his show "Jamie Oliver School Dinners" http://www.jamieoliver.com/school-dinners. It's an eye opening series about banning the junk in schools and getting kids to eat fresh, tasty nutritious food instead .... on a limited public school budget. He's got another show called Ministry of Food where he used the basis of an old wartime campaign to teach families to make the most of wartime rations. Only this time he teaches families to cook back to basics food, omitting fast food and such while educating the public about food and proper nutrition so they'd be healthy and fighting fit. http://www.jamieoliver.com/jamies-ministry-of-food/about

You could probably find parts of his shows on youtube .... assuming you have the money and time to access a computer with internet access, which probably means most people on food stamps are once again disadvantaged.Live longerhttp://buddingplanet.com/live-longer-with-peachesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9238806.post-25341787668763548542009-09-06T19:15:10.130-04:002009-09-06T19:15:10.130-04:00Pig in a sugary blanket is a 'reasonably balan...Pig in a sugary blanket is a 'reasonably balanced' breakfast? Way too much sugar and fat there. I bet the pancake mix is loaded with sugar and salt, vs self-raising flour, an egg and some milk. The cheap orange juice is almost certainly topped up with sugar too.

... but i do feel sorry for your people in the usa. Raw ingredients are expensive, and fresh vegetables are generally pretty tasteless even after all that cost. And to top it off you generally have to drive miles to giant food-stores full of stale boxes of stuff. And everything is loaded with sugar.

Just $21 for a single person would be tricky, but with $42/two people or more would be easier as you can absorb bigger items like 10 kilos of flour or rice every few weeks. And you would likely have more man-hours available for cooking.

Having said that, there's plenty of people in the world who live off a lot less than that, and you'd be surprised how expensive basics like rice are in these countries (world market and all).NotZedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09469760565180198154noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9238806.post-59002712010847337232008-04-24T01:11:00.000-04:002008-04-24T01:11:00.000-04:00School lunches? I believe most, if not all, families on food stamps qualify for free lunch--and believe me, most people will take a free lunch wherever it's available.

School lunches have a well-deserved bad rep...sometime you have to be pretty hungry to eat it. I do shop the sales, stock up, make trips to the produce market and the bread outlet--all things that I can do that someone in a less secure situation may not be able to do.TulipGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10491713586488210547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9238806.post-2536111072907394962007-05-21T18:23:00.000-04:002007-05-21T18:23:00.000-04:00Great post. It's funny when she and my dad get home from shopping and my dad snuck something into the cart without her noticing. "That wasn't on the list"! For a family of 4 (mom, dad, two kids) with foster kids until I was in 4th grade, I look back on my mom spending $100 or less a week and just shake my head in amazement. That was 15 years ago though. No idea how that would turn out today.LVDemhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07359661408192860813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9238806.post-50558196517041816132007-04-30T13:19:00.000-04:002007-04-30T13:19:00.000-04:00I'm a pretty frugal single. While I think I probably average about $3/day on food, that's with buying generics, sale items and having access to several good, reasonably priced fruit/vegetable markets and being able to walk to food stores. I would not want to try that trick with a family.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9238806.post-13897325156463048022007-04-30T10:30:00.000-04:002007-04-30T10:30:00.000-04:00great post - just shows how screwed up our priorit...great post - just shows how screwed up our priorities are as a culture.DeWitthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18119492053309815649noreply@blogger.com
